reading this headline, you may wonder, what is a mascot Handler? A Mascot Handler is basically a mascot\u2019s security guard, guide, and confidant all in one. As fun as it is to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/olympusmascots.com\/videos\/performing-in-your-mascot-costume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">performer inside a mascot costume<\/span>,<\/a> the confines of the suit itself can be limiting. Consider the following:<\/p><ul><li>Mascots are not supposed to talk, as it breaks the illusion of the character. This means that the performer inside the suit cannot communicate verbally when an audience is present.<\/li><li>Mascot suits have limited vision; therefore, the performers situational awareness is reduced. This is especially an issue when there are small children around due to their short height.<\/li><li>Movement is somewhat reduced in a suit, so it can be difficult to get dressed up or adjust any mascot accessories.<\/li><li>Mascots can\u2019t operate a phone, hold a camera, or carry their own accessories. Gear handling and timekeeping need to be handled by someone other than the performer.<\/li><li>Mascots can\u2019t really defend themselves. While we\u2019ve never had or heard of a mascot being hassled, someone needs to ward off pranksters or lead the mascot into hiding if they\u2019re unmasked. There could also be an accident where your mascot trips, falls, or bunks their head. Having a mascot handler is just as important as having the mascot itself. The handler is there to make the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/olympusmascots.com\/blog\/how-be-a-mascot-performer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mascot performer<\/a><\/span>\u2019s life way easier, and to improve the audience\u2019s experience. In preparation for this blog, we attended Fromm Family Food\u2019s 2022 Fall Petfest right here in Milwaukee. Two of our local mascot technicians were inside the suits, while another mascot technician acted as a handler. Fromm also gifted us one of their employees for the day who managed all our behind-the-scenes access. As a team they roamed the festival grounds taking pictures, interacting with vendors, and even celebrated Ernie\u2019s 8<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. While you don\u2019t need a team this big normally, we felt it was a good size since we had 2 mascots in action and tons of fury faces to see!<\/p><p>Through this event and the several decades of experience as mascot manufacturers, we\u2019ve learned and broken down everything a mascot handler needs to do to be a success. So, without further delay lets learn how to <em>handle<\/em> being a mascot handler!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-570673d elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"570673d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-11a0468 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"11a0468\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8bfb5f3\" data-id=\"8bfb5f3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c9d7cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c9d7cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Communication<\/h2><p>Mascots need to maintain the illusion that they are a character, and nothing breaks that illusion more than hearing a performer talk. As a result, most mascots are completely silent in-person. This means that your performer can\u2019t verbally communicate to you in public. This is where hand signals come into play. Asking a performer simple yes or no questions that they can reply to with a head shake, or a thumbs up\/down is a great way to establish clear communication.<\/p><p>Another thing a handler should be responsible for is translation. Since a mascot can\u2019t talk, they may use hand signals and gestures to interact with people. However, people may not always understand what the mascot is trying to communicate. Here is an example:<\/p><p>At Petfest, we had a little girl come up to Porky with a giant sunflower clip in her hair. Porky saw this, pointed at it, and put his hands to his mouth as if to say, \u201cOh my gosh it\u2019s so pretty!\u201d the little girl, however, was trying to decipher what Porky was reacting to. That\u2019s when one of our handlers said, \u201cPorky loves your hair clip!\u201d. Immediately the little girl\u2019s face lit up with happiness and started telling Porky where she got it from.<\/p><p>Being able to talk for the mascot is huge, especially when interacting with kids. You may not always translate exactly what a performer is trying to communicate with their hands, but you\u2019re still giving spectators hints on the development of the interaction.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2376c0e elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"2376c0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\"Body language is a very powerful tool. Understand that many costumes have little to no peripheral vision vertically or to the side. This can mean your performer sees nothing except what is directly in front of them. Unfortunately, objects, people, or changes in terrain come in at all angles. Tell your mascot what is happening around them. Some examples may include\u2026<\/p><p>\u201cHey Porky, you got a little one behind you.\u201d (Referring to a child approaching the mascot to the rear)<\/p><p>\u201cCareful in front of you Ernie, there is a tripping hazard followed by a downward slope, I will hold your hand to guide you down it\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cOk Porky, we are going to pose for a picture, turn your head slightly to the left to look at the camera.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cOk Ernie, we\u2019re headed up some stairs now, I will put your hands on the guiding rails, and will tell you when you\u2019ve reached the final step.\u201d<\/p><p>For the most part, the performer can see enough to complete high-fives, walk around, and interact with people without a handler needing to intervene. A performer certainly isn\u2019t walking around blind, but it\u2019s those close encounters that you need to watch out for as a handler. Immediately following this interaction with a fan, the mascot handlers jumped in to fix his hat.<\/p><p>The Performer had no idea the hat was falling off until it was too late. Thankfully the handler was quick to react to keep up the illusion for the surrounding audience.<\/p><p>Another area where a mascot handler was useful was during the suit-up process. It is the handler\u2019s job to let the performer know how long they have until their next commitment is scheduled. That way you can both start wrapping up what you\u2019re currently doing and start heading in the right direction. You don\u2019t have to be a bodyguard, but be an active presence around your mascot, especially when there are rambunctious teenagers about. As a handler, you will often be asked to take pictures for others. Don\u2019t forget to take multiple photos in both portrait and landscape format. Their nose smells human and fabric, but their eyes say, \u201cGIANT FLUFFY MONSTER\u201d. The dogs we encountered during our time at Petfest had mixed reactions to the mascots. Most dogs were totally fine and didn\u2019t even care. In fact, some were super excited to meet their mascot heroes! However, a small minority were hesitant and had no desire to take a picture with them. As a handler, keep this is mind. A performer\u2019s safety is priority, if a dog clearly wants no part in the mascot experience, accept that. Do not force the dog or performer into a sketchy situation to snap a picture. The same approach should be taken for small children that have a negative reaction to a mascot. However, there are several actions your performer can do to make themselves more approachable, we recommend your performer watch our video on how to be a mascot performer to learn what to do when encountering a hesitant child.<\/li><\/ul><ul>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-804e7c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"804e7c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>Your performer needs breaks. During weather above 70F, we recommend matching your break time with your performing time, a half hour of performing equals a half hour of break time. For colder weather, a half-hour of performing equals 15-minutes of break time. Performers will sweat a ton inside a mascot costume. So, it\u2019s a good idea for the performer to change their shirt, go to the bathroom, and sit down with a nice cold water\/Gatorade during their break.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-248d44a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"248d44a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Mascot suits don\u2019t like water. While getting the suit wet isn\u2019t the end of the world, we recommend staying under cover if it starts raining. We also recommend trying to keep your performer in the shade when they\u2019re not taking pictures, it helps them stay a tiny bit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/olympusmascots.com\/blog\/how-to-keep-your-mascot-performer-cool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooler<\/a><\/span>.
