How to Prompt AI for a Mascot Sketch

When you begin to create or redesign your mascot, one of the most difficult parts can be bringing your idea to life and putting it on paper. In today’s world, however, you don’t need to be an artist to start designing a mascot. Many customers come to Olympus with a rough sketch or even an AI generated image of their mascot idea. The goal of the early sketch is just to show off your concept, after all.

If you are using AI to generate your sketch, though, the prompt matters. Many AI tools only allow you a limited number of image generations, so it’s important to give your AI the right details in only one or two prompts. The right prompt will create a clear mascot concept in the first couple of tries.

This blog will help you give your AI tool the most descriptive and efficient AI prompt to help bring your mascot to life!

What to Include in Every Prompt

Whenever you give AI a prompt, the more specific it is, the better. Think of it as giving details to a sales rep or designer. This way, you can get your mascot concept in just a couple of prompts. In your prompt, try to include:

  • What the mascot should be (animal, food, object, device, etc.)
  • Who the audience is
  • A few personality traits (friendly, energetic, silly, bold, confident…)
  • Your brand and team colors
  • When and how it will be used
  • Specific instructions to make it look like a real, wearable costume

Try to be as descriptive as possible. The more details the AI has, the more practical the generation will be. And most importantly, the more aligned with your vision it will be!

How to Make it Work as a Real Concept

To touch more on that last point, AI often creates something that looks great in a picture but would be difficult to turn into a real costume. When writing your prompt, ask AI to use things like:

  • Simple shapes
  • Clear features
  • Large expressions
  • Visible arms and legs
  • A clear silhouette

It’s also best to avoid overly detailed textures, tiny accessories, thin parts, or overly complicated designs. While it may look cool in an image, it may not translate well into a real costume. Keep in mind that things like a logo, text, and props can always be added later. In many cases, AI will blur or distort logos in the mockup anyway, so it’s best to just focus on the concept first.

Try This Formula

To help you create your AI generated mascot concept, we created this prompt for you to draw inspiration from, or fill in and paste into your AI tool:

“Create a full-body mascot costume concept for [organization/type of group]. The mascot should be a [animal/object/product/character] with a [description words] personality. It should appeal to [audience] and be used for [events/locations/purpose]. Use [brand/team colors]. Make the design simple, friendly, and easy to understand from far away. Show the mascot standing front-facing in a neutral pose. Make it look like a real wearable mascot costume with large readable features, visible arms and legs, and a clear silhouette. Avoid tiny details, thin parts, complex textures, text, logos, or anything that would be difficult to turn into a costume.”

Don’t be afraid to adjust wording or add specific details to explain your mascot idea.

Here are some example prompts you can use to help create your organization’s perfect mascot:

Construction Company Bulldog Mascot

“Create a full-body mascot costume concept for a construction company. The mascot should be a tough but friendly bulldog with a confident, hardworking personality. It should appeal to workers, families, and community event attendees and be used for job site events, trade shows, and company outreach. Use yellow, black, gray, and white as the primary colors. Include subtle construction-inspired details like a hard hat or safety vest. Make the design simple, bold, and easy to recognize from far away. Show the mascot standing front-facing in a neutral pose. Make it look like a real wearable mascot costume with large readable features, visible arms and legs, and a clean silhouette. Avoid tiny details, thin parts, complex textures, text, logos, or anything difficult to turn into a real costume.”

Athletic Black Panther Mascot

“Create a full-body mascot costume concept for a high school athletics program. The mascot should be a sleek black panther with a confident, energetic, and intimidating personality while still feeling family-friendly for students and fans. It should be used at football games, pep rallies, school assemblies, and community events. Use black, silver, and dark blue as the primary colors. Include subtle athletic-inspired details like a jersey or sporty accents without making the design overly complicated. Keep the panther recognizable as a real black panther while giving it expressive mascot-style features. Make the design bold, clean, and easy to recognize from far away. Keep the proportions balanced and natural without an oversized head or exaggerated facial features. Show the mascot standing front-facing in a neutral pose. Make it look like a real wearable mascot costume with visible arms and legs and a strong, clean silhouette. Avoid tiny details, thin parts, realistic fur textures, text, logos, or anything that would be difficult to turn into a real mascot costume.”

Football Team Warrior Mascot

“Create a full-body mascot costume concept for a football team. The mascot should be a strong warrior character with a bold, energetic, and intimidating personality while still feeling family-friendly for fans and students. It should be used at football games, pep rallies, school events, and community appearances. Use dark red, black, silver, and white as the primary colors. Include simple armor-inspired details while keeping the overall design clean and readable from far away. The character should have realistic mascot costume proportions — athletic and sturdy, but not overly muscular or oversized. Avoid exaggerated bodybuilder anatomy, giant shoulders, or proportions that would be impractical for a wearable mascot suit. Focus on a believable performer-friendly silhouette with comfortable movement and balanced proportions. Show the mascot standing front-facing in a neutral pose. Make it look like a real wearable mascot costume with large readable features, visible arms and legs, and a strong silhouette. Avoid tiny details, realistic weapons, thin parts, complex textures, text, logos, or anything that would be difficult to turn into a real mascot costume.”

What to Do If Your First Image Isn’t Quite Right

Don’t worry if your first AI-generated image doesn’t come out perfectly. It’s likely you only need to make a couple of small changes. If the mascot looks too complicated, ask for simpler shapes. If it looks a little creepy, ask for friendlier expressions and softer features. If it looks too cartoony, ask to make it more costume-like. Small tweaks can make all the difference in the result.

Remember to specify that you want a full-body wearable mascot costume with visible arms and legs, large features, and a clean silhouette. If you run out of image generations, remember the idea doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is just to create a starting point that helps communicate your idea to our team. We’ll use your AI-generated image as a guide for when we turn your idea into a professional sketch.
